Parent Participation

Manly West

Parental involvement and participation at Manly West Primary School is warmly invited and actively encouraged. Parents are invited to attend various functions during the year as part of the school's calendar, and parents are welcome in the school at any time. There are many ways in which parents can participate in the school. Some of these are:

1. The School Council which represents parents, teachers and the community is the key policy making body for the school. Its representatives are elected and the Council meets monthly.

2. Membership of the Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) is open to all parents of pupils attending Manly West and to all interested citizens. The P&C aims to promote the interests of the school by bringing parents, teaching staff and community members into close co-operation as well as assisting financially in providing facilities and equipment for the school. It provides members with an opportunity for participation and decision-making in the school through membership of its sub-committees.

These include Finance, Fund-Raising/Social, Environment, School Promotion, Fireworks, School Uniform, Canteen, School Band, Before and After School Care (BASC), Curriculum Committees in areas such as Technology, Gifted & Talented Education, and Library. Membership of these sub-committees, as well as executive membership of the Association itself, is encouraged.

Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month, 7.30pm in the school library.

3. Throughout the school, classroom parent-helpers give assistance in many areas including reading, computers, library and craft. In some classes, particularly K - 2, assistance is needed in story writing as well.

4. The school canteen, which is open from Monday - Friday, relies on volunteers to operate under the direction of a full time manager.

5. The Fund-raising Committee is particularly active in organising events during
the year which not only supplement the resources of the school's budget, but also provide opportunity for social gatherings that help strengthen the bond between the school and its community.

6. Other involvement includes occasional working bees to assist with grounds maintenance, or assisting at functions such as Open Days and Kindergarten Orientation Day.

There is then ample opportunity at Manly West Primary School for parents to be a part of their children's school life. As well the children enjoy their parents' presence and familiarity with their teachers and school.
