Following are some examples of the Year 5 classes of Manly
West Primary School work:
Emperor Penguins
Emperor Penguins are birds. They live in Antartica on the ice and in the
freezing sea. Emperor penguins have feathers but they cannot fly. Emperor
Penguins hunt in the sea for krill, squid and fish. In late May or June
the female Emperor Penguins lay one greenish white egg. In July or August
the eggs are ready to hatch. The chicks must learn to dive, swim and hunt
for food.
Penguins keep warm because they have such a thick layer of blubber under
their fur. They huddle together to keep warm.

My Favourite Place
My favourite place is a certain piece of bushland. It is lush, with rays
of sunlight here and there. It has a quiet, trickling creek and you can
smell moss and rain from the night before.
I love hearing the soft crunching of leaves beneath my feet and seeing
the sky, blue water miles ahead of me. There are trees everywhere with
dark green and bright green leaves.
You can follow the creek further down and see bull ants marching up a
tree trunk. It is silent there, except for the croaking of frogs and the
creeks slow murmur!
I can climb up boulders and see the magnificent water view in the distance.
If you go far enough you can begin to hear the sound of waves crashing.
I wish I was there now.

From my chair the scene was like a dream. It was a sunny, hot day filled
with children laughing and birds singing. The weather was not too cold
and not too hot; it was just perfect. The water was crystal clear and
the sand castles were a magnificent tower. The clouds were just like a
fluffy pillow.
There were happy children squealing with joy and delight. The sand was
like a hidden desert from my sun chair. The birds were flapping, playing
and eating in the breeze.
The sky was like a blue leather jacket on the horizon. The sun was like
a shimmering diamond on the water.

My Favourite Place
When I first saw Hamilton Island (Queensland) it was from in a plane on
a window seat. Even from up there it was the most beautiful island I had
ever seen. It was a lovely small island with tall coconut trees on the
shore and was surrounded by crystal clear, blue, sparkling water with
coral underneath.
When we were at Hamilton Islands minature airport my family was stunned
by the fantastic views from an airport!! From then on I knew I was going
to love the island.
Hamilton Island has brilliant beaches, affordable apartments, spectacular
scuba diving spots, cool coconuts and amazing activities to do. There
is also a kids club which my brother and I went to one day and it was
quite fun.

Train to Nowhere
Kirsten and I wait on Platform 13, we feel the wind on our faces, the
tracks vibrate - the train is coming. We look on the sign board that shows
the times of all the trains. Suddenly the train that we are supposed to
catch at 9:15pm changes to 7:45pm and then 8:23am and keeps changing and
changing. Then the destinations start changing. We are supposed to be
going to Chatswood to meet some friends and then go home, but the destinations
change to places we had never heard of (like Madeera and Barsvillea).
We are scared and worried until the sign board finally says Chatswood
9:15. When our train comes we are very relieved. As we board the train,
I take one last look at the sign board - our train has been completely
wiped off the board!!
I try to get off the train but it's useless, there is no way off this
train. We start screaming for help but no-one can hear us. We run through
the carriages but no-one is there, not even the driver - but the steering
wheel is still moving somehow.
The train races along, passing through scenery we don't recognise. All
these places are totally deserted - no signs, empty platforms and empty
seats. We have to get off this train somehow. But there is absolutely
no way off this train!
My mobile phone! As I turn it on, I hear a voice. I look around but there
is no- one else on the train but me and Kirsten. The voice says "Come
to me now and then my mobile phone flies out of my hands and disappears
into thin air.
I try to open the windows by banging my fists on the glass, when all at
once the glass flies out at me deeply cutting my arm and, with the glass
still flying at us, we take cover under our seats. Kirsten wraps up my
arm with a piece of her shirt.
My mind is a blur - the train speeds up heading towards the darkness of
a tunnel. We enter the darkness screaming. The train suddenly disappears
and everything is black. I think I am dead.
I open my eyes - sweat dripping from my forehead. Where am I? What happened?
My mind is racing as I slowly realise I am in bed - it has all been a
horrible nightmare! I try to slow my breathing and relax - Oh No!! I feel
a sharp stabbing pain in my arm. I look down horrified. My arm is still
wrapped in the cloth that came from Kirsten's shirt! I slowly unwrap the
cloth and underneath is the deep cut from the glass on the train!!
The train still haunts my dreams. It is always the same train.
